2025 ME STRONG 5K Race – An Enduring Tradition of Compassion
Join Us on February 1, 2025, in DeLand, Florida to Support Local Cancer Patients in Need
Bradenton, Fla., August 2, 2024 — The Florida Cancer Specialists (FCS) Foundation
(FCSF) is honored to be the charitable recipient of the 2025 ME STRONG 5K race in DeLand, Florida, the area’s largest and most successful fundraising run for the benefit of local cancer patients in need. The ME STRONG 5K originated in 2011 when Linda Ryan was diagnosed with recurrent cervical cancer. Her four close friends, Barbara McCallan, Kim Winters, Kim Martin, and Kathy Guyer, organized a 5K race event that would reflect Linda’s kind spirit, passion for healthy living and determination to persevere.
The inaugural ME STRONG 5k was so successful that it ignited a ray of hope for community members who had been touched by cancer. Since that first race, the ME STRONG 5K has continued to grow in popularity, thanks to broad community support and participation of partners and sponsors, including longtime title sponsor Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) and community partner The Rotary Clubs of West Volusia.
To date, over $2 Million has been raised to aid those battling cancer who need financial assistance for everyday essential living expenses.. Maintaining the tradition established by the ME STRONG 5K founders, the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation designates 100% of the event’s sponsorship funds to go directly to the financial support of local individuals navigating life with a cancer diagnosis.
FCS Foundation Board Co-Chairs Michael Diaz, MD and Raul Storey, MD stated, “It is a tremendous honor for the FCS Foundation to participate with the sponsors and partners of the ME STRONG 5K. As oncologists, we see the great need among patients to receive non-medical financial assistance that can alleviate some of the stress and worry about unpaid bills. ME STRONG will enable us to increase patient grants and support in DeLand and the surrounding communities in Volusia County.”
Victor Melgen MD, who practices with Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute (FCS) in DeLand, said, “ME STRONG has established a long-standing tradition of caring and support for cancer patients that is truly shared community wide. I have witnessed the difference this race makes in the lives of patients in our local community and beyond. FCS is privileged to again be the presenting sponsor of the event in 2025.”
Lynn Rasys, Executive Director of the FCS Foundation, added, “There is great synergy between our mission and the mission of ME STRONG. The 2024 walk/run provided over $192,000 for local patients, and we look forward to carrying on the great tradition of ME STRONG and welcoming participants and race spectators from Central Florida and across the country in February 2025.”
